Jazz music. I love jazz music. Particularly 30-50’s instrumental stuff, but I also adore female jazz vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald. Her music was what really got me into this. This song is the first jazz recording I have ever listened to, and I’ve been listening to it for years.Â

Arrested Development. But you already knew that.Â

Epaulettes. Particularly the ones worn by Colin Firth in The King’s Speech. I adore epaulettes and I want them on all of my shirts and jackets so I can always feel fancy.

Electronic magazines. No subscription necessary, the advertisements are as pretty as the editorials, and they frequently spotlight independent designers, businesses, and bloggers which I love. Give these three a read, you’ll be smitten.

Interning for Her Campus Media. It’s an online magazine, in which new articles relating specifically to college women go up every day, rather than all at once. I love working with this company and watching it grow. The ladies that I get to work with are also wonderful. I get to contribute and manage different branches of the magazine at different schools. Anyone can start a branch, here’s how!

Making these frozen chocolate banana treats. Mine don’t come out as pretty, but they are GOOD.

This badass superhero cake.

Attending the Planned Parenthood rally in New York City on Saturday. I’m so glad I went to this. The morale was high and the ladies and gentlemen there were so awesome. ALL of the speakers were fantastic. (I arrived just in time to hear Cecile Richards speak.) I loved hearing our Congressmen-and-women speak out loud against the terrible legislation voted on by the House. This is an issue I am very passionate about. The threat to the current state of women’s healthcare makes me absolutely livid. If you have not already signed the open letter to Congress, urging them to oppose the proposed ban on PP’s funding, do it here. To learn more about Planned Parenthood, click here.

wait, what.
Question: Melanie, is this your first time ever watching the show Arrested Development?
Answer: Why, yes. Yes it is.
Q: And how are you enjoying it so far?
A: I am enjoying it very much. In fact, I’m not going to leave my room today until I’ve finished all of Season One and at least the first five episodes of Season Two on Netflix.
Q: Is there something else that you could be doing today?
A: No. Actually now that I’ve begun watching it, I can’t think of a single goddamn thing that could keep me apart from this television show.
My current favorite song.Â
Allen Ginsberg’s poetry is some of the most beautiful stuff I’ve ever read. I’m pretty amazed it’s taken me this long to get into his work, but I am finally there.Â
I really love his stream-of-consciousness style. I love seeing his imagery in real time. I really love the fact that his poetry is so sensorial. I flip to any page in his collection of poems and I know exactly what he is talking about, because I can feel it.Â
This is poetry that is pure description. This is all showing and no telling. I wish I had read this stuff before taking creative writing, because I tend to cling very much to the facts and not so much the feeling.Â
Give him a read sometime, you will either totally understand him or you won’t, it’s okay.
This past weekend we finally met our cousins from Texas.
It was wonderful.
