Sailor’s delight

On the 10th day of 2023, I saw Yuja Wang and the NY Philharmonic in their fourth and final performance of the US debut of Magnus Lindberg’s Piano Concerto No. 3.
My seat was in the first row of the parterre section behind the orchestra—one of the most immersive vantage points I’ve ever experienced live music from, I think.

And, as a funny result of this seat choice, I also ended up in the background of Yuja Wang’s Instagram stories. This is far more thrilling to me than it should be.

Mulchfest ‘23 was everything I hoped it would be!!!

A lil out of practice, but it’s nice to be sip ‘n’ sketching again.

Stunning carpet art seen at (where else?) Ditmars Thrift.

Spent this first day of 2023 lightening up the bookshelves while listening to The Stork Club on WFMU.

Behold, these are all of the books I read in 2022! Intriguingly, I read 37 books last year, too.
The clear winner of the year was Parker Posey’s memoir You’re on an Airplane. So nice, I read it twice—as you can tell from above. Actually, I listened to her read the audiobook version the second time, and it was like radio theater. It’s the kind of book that’s so offbeat and original, it gives me hope.
The book Nina Simone’s Gum by Warren Ellis was a close second, and I like it for a very similar reason. This book is so specific to the author—it is about a singular, mythic obsession. The narrative spirals out into many fascinating digressions and memory walks. Absolutely beautiful book.
Other favorites include Busy Doing Nothing, Journal of a Solitude, Fun Home, and 66 Square Feet. And I’m so glad I picked up To Fall in Love, Drink This at the last minute from the library before I left for Christmas, because I read it in less than 48 hours and LOVED every second of it.
All in all, a solid list. I guess here’s to reading another 37 books in 2023?

And so, the year Twenty Two Twenty comes to a close.
Good song for today.

Samesies.

Gazing into the loopy, scripted cells of Vali Myers’s diary circa 1975.
