If you’re going to go to the East Village, I recommend going at 11:10 in the morning, which is exactly when I landed at the Stuyvesant Cove ferry stop. The sun was hot, but the streets were incredibly calm and pin-drop quiet. The neighborhood was fast asleep.

I was very early for a brunch meetup, so I decided to grab a chocolate croissant at a coffee shop called The Roost. As I sat there in the little outdoor section, earplugs in, trying to ignore the sporadic coughing outbursts from the old man doing the crossword a few seats behind me, I look up and see this. A strange signpost from a not-so-long ago era of my life.

I always feel slightly haunted walking around this part of town.
